ABOUT GANGA


  • Ganga Hospital was started in 1978 by Dr J G Shanmuganathan and Mrs Kanakavalli Shanmuganathan with 17 beds and 2 Operating theatres at Ramnagar, Coimbatore. The hospital underwent multi-staged expansions and was converted to a specialty centre in Orthopaedics and Plastic Surgery after their sons Dr S Raja Sabapathy and Dr S Rajasekaran returned to India following specialist training in UK and USA. In 1991. The hospital moved over to its present premises in Mettupalayam Road, Coimbatore in 2007 and also had added expansion to a separate block in 2020.

  • At present, with a bed capacity of 650 beds and 38 Operating theatres dedicated to the field of Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery and Trauma Surgery, the hospital stands as one of the largest speciality units in this field in South Asia.

  • In 2024, the hospital catered to 2,55,297 Outpatients, 29,856 Inpatients, 34,225 Surgeries and 3,642 International Patients.

Rapid growth following the establishment of the Orthopaedics and Plastic Surgery departments.

The Third Expansion

Expanded into subspecialties including Spine Surgery, Hand Surgery, Arthroplasty, Pediatric Surgery, Brachial Plexus Surgery, Burns, and Advanced Microsurgical Reconstruction.

  • Intensive Trauma Care Unit
  • Regional Blood Bank
  • Microsurgery lab expanded with four training stations.
  • In-house radiology department with 1.5 T MRI and 16 slice CT scan

The Fourth Expansion

  • B Block was inaugurated with a total of 650 beds and 38 operation theatres.
  • The expansion included Intensive Care, Specialist Microsurgery Intensive Care and Specialist Intensive Burns Care.
  • Additional of 3 T MRI and 16 slice CT scan

Ganga Microsurgery Training Lab

  • Inauguration of the Ganga Microsurgery Training Institute in May 2000.
  • An advanced microsurgery lab was set up at Ganga Hospital and opened to all surgeons.
  • As of October 2025, 3,444 surgeons from several countries have been trained by the lab.
