Spine unit of Ganga Hospital bags international awards

The Spine Surgery unit of Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, won five awards in the recently concluded annual conference of the Asia Pacific Spine Society held in Seoul, Korea.

A release issued by S. Rajasekaran, Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery of the hospital, said that awards won by the unit were for the best research papers in both, clinical research and basic science research.

The clinical research was for the novel and sophisticated methods of treating spine fractures using intraoperative computer navigated surgery. The basic science research was for the advanced proteomics and molecular science which probed into the fetal proteomics. The study aims to identify proteins and biological pathways during the formative stages of the foetus which can be utilised for regenerative therapies in adults. This can be used for reversing disc degenerative disease, which is the most common cause of low back pain.

The papers presented by the unit also received the Best Paper Award of the Asian Spine Journal. The papers will be published as lead articles in the international journal, said the release. The clinical research was performed by Dr. Rajasekaran, doctors Ajoy Prasad Shetty, Rishi Mugesh Kanna and Dilip Chand Raja. The basic science research was performed by Dr. Rajasekaran, Dr. Chitraa Tangavel, Dr. Raveendran Muthurajan, Dr. Vijay Anand, Dr. Raja, Ms. Sharon Miracle Nayagam and Ms. Monica Steffi Matchado.

The basic science research was performed at Ganga Research Centre, which is a research facility approved by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, set up to probe into the molecular solutions for low back pain.
