'Minor' Facial Injuries
Any injury to the face, however small it may be causes aprehension in the mind of the injured person. They fear scarring and deformity. The fear is justifiable, because even a ‘small’ injury can cause a ‘scar which attracts attention’
Can we prevent scars?
No body can operate without a scar but the surgeons at the Plastic Surgery Department of Ganga Hospital try to minimise the effects of scarring as far as possible. We try to use sutures which are less reactive, scars supporting techniques to prevent stretching of scars, silicone gel sheets and compression garments to prevent scar thickening.
We cannot prevent scars but we try to make them less noticeable.
It is much better to manage even small wounds well than to attempt subsequent scar revision.
It is better to get even a small wound taken care of well the first time than attempt to correct the scar.
Major Maxillofacial Trauma
The Unit offers the services of a team of Plastic Surgeons and Maxillofacial Surgeons to treat major injuries to the face. They are ably supported by a skilled anaethesiology team round the clock.
A 45 year old lady was chopped twice on her face while she was asleep due to family enmity. The cut through the upper jaw extended up to the spine. She also had injuries in other parts of the body. The surgeons at Ganga Hospital worked for 7 hours to restore a face which is cosmetically acceptable with good functional outcome.

After Surgery with good mouth opening |
The Unit at Ganga Hospital is geared up to handle such situations round the clock.
In high velocity injuries such as road traffic accidents the facial bones may severely be fractured. It is a challenge to get them all together, to restore the face to the pre injury status and to get proper relationship between the teeth of two jaws. The 3D CT scan reconstruction available in the hospital enables the surgeons to correctly assess the extent of injury and plan the treatment. Present day plating techniques help in quick recovery and rapid return to function.
