Ganga Hospital wins International Spine Research Award ISSLS – 2010

The team of doctors led by Dr S Rajasekaran won the ISSLS award 2010 for the best basic science research work for the second time. The team has previously won the award in 2004. The team comprised of Dr S Rajasekaran, Dr S Vidyadhara, Dr M Subbiah, Dr Vijay Kamath, Dr R Karunanithi, Dr Ajoy P Shetty, Dr K Venkateswaran, Dr Mary Babu and Dr J Meenakshi.


International Spine Research Award ISSLS – 2010

The topic of the work was "A study of effects of in vivo mechanical forces on human lumbar discs with scoliotic disc as a biological model. - Results from serial post-contrast diffusion studies, histopathological and biomechanical analysis of 21 human lumbar scoliotic discs". The work was also awarded the ASSI – Basic Science Research Award – 2010 by the Association of Spine Surgeons of India.

Truncal Decompensation
The image shows that with truncal decompensation, there is a significant decrease in the number of viable cells in the caudal segments.

In this work, 6 patients with AIS were assessed with pre and post contrast MRI followed by a histological and biochemical evaluation of the disc material harvested during scoliosis correction surgery. The results were compared to normal discs harvested from tumor surgery. The study showed that end plate damages occurred early on both the concave and convex sides of scoliosis and this led to changes in the diffusion leading to early degeneration. These changes were more pronounced in the caudal end than in the apex and were more pronounced in patients with truncal deviation. These findings have important implications in the timing and choice of surgery. Previously the effect of mechanical stress on the biology of the disc has largely been studied in animal models which may not truly reflect the biology of human lumbar disc. This is the first study to have been performed in human scoliotic discs.
