Trauma

The trauma service has increased considerably following the expansion of the unit with the addition of a full-fleged trauma intensive care facility, neurosurgical facility and on-call cardiothoracic and general surgeons to cater to polytraumatised patients. The outpatient fracture clinic sees more than 100 patients per day. The inpatient trauma surgical patients have seen huge increases every year.

The increase in work load is a reflection of the good results and the patient’s confidence in the team which provides consultant level input into all trauma patients. The anesthetic, orthopaedic and the plastic surgery teams work hand in hand from resuscitation to the post operative care and rehabilitation. The close co-operation has brought out many trends in the treatment of severely injured limbs especially the management of open and severely mangled limbs. This close co-operation has also highlighted many new principles such as ‘on-arrival blocks’ , the evolution of ‘Ganga Hospital Score for Open Injuries of Limbs’ and ‘ day-one global reconstruction of soft tissue and bone defects in suitable open injuries’

Having 5 theatres dedicated to trauma surgery and an in-house trauma anesthetic team 24 hrs of the day allows life-saving damage control surgeries to be started without any delay. The highlight of the hospital is also the availability of the full compliment of the surgical, anesthetic and diagnostic facility including CT and MRI at any time of the day or time. This ensures the least possible time and delay for a severely injured patient from arrival to an emergency surgery.

The trauma work-load is managed by five consultants, three senior registrars, four registrars and the residents of the hospital.
