Department of Spine Surgery - Spine Microsurgery Course

Microdiscectomy and micro-lumbar decompression are considered “Gold Standard” procedures for the treatment of lumbar and cervical disc prolapse as well as lumbar canal stenosis. Microsurgery has numerous advantages over conventional surgery, including smaller incision and approach, better identification of structures and shorter hospital stay. However these microsurgical techniques have a significant learning curve and require specialised training. Perfecting the skills of microsurgery in the laboratory makes clinical work easy with high success rate.

Though microsurgical training courses are available, they have the disadvantage of lack of concurrent clinical exposure and “hands on” wet lab training. Laboratory must have excellent microscopes, quality instruments and a good working environment.  To provide this facility to the aspiring trainees in spine microsurgery, Ganga Hospital in association with Carl Zeiss set up the “Ganga Spine Microsurgery Training Centre”.

Highlights of the course
Assist the faculty in theatre and practice the same “hands on” in the wet lab
Carl Zeiss OPMI MDU microscopes in the wet lab
Good quality instruments (similar to those used in theatre)
CD with videos of cervical and lumbar micro-discectomy , lumbar micro-decompression dural opening and suturing
Faculty always at hand

The only centre in the country in the country to offer such a comprehensive training programme.

Dr Abdul Halim Yusof
Malaysia
“Well designed programme for the microsurgical spine course. Will recommend to friends and colleagues”

Dr Ahmed
Malaysia
“It is a good exposure and (it) changed my perception of “difficult surgery” to rather “comfortable surgery”. It has developed my interest to us the microscope for the benefit of patients and development of spine (surgery) in Malaysia”

Dr Muthuraj
Nagercoil, India
“Well taught course, an eye opener for a beginner who wants to train in micro spine surgery. I learned a lot about the tips and tricks of using the microscope for cervical and lumbar discectomy. Looking forward for an advanced course in the future”

Dr Arul Durai Arasu
Dindigul, India
“It is really enthusiastic to see through the microscope actually used for surgery, the same was used in the Ganga wet lab. I thank the spine team giving me an opportunity to assist micro spine cases and taking a lot of pain to train us on (use of) microscope. At wet lab the calf spine was very well prepared for cervical and lumbar discectomy and dural suturing”

Dr Ashok
Trivandrum, India
“it was a wonderful experience at the Ganga Microsurgery Training Centre. After assisting a lot of cases (in theatre) and the hands on in the wet lab, I am very confident of working with the microscope and doing spine microsurgery.”
