Department of Orthopaedics - Introduction
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides state of the art treatment in all fields of Orthopaedic Surgery including Trauma and Accident Surgery, Spine Surgery, Joint Replacements, Paediatric Orthopaedics, Shoulder Surgery, Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy. The department was established in 1989 when Prof. Dr. M.V Daniel, Former Professor and Head of the department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Christian Medical College, Vellore started the service and later expanded it to a full fledged unit in 1991.
The unit is headed by Dr.S. Rajasekaran with four other Consultants. Dr Dr. J. Dheenadhayalan, Dr. Ajoy Prasad Shetty, Dr. S R Sundararajan, Dr. P Dhanasekara Raja and Dr. N. Rajkumar, all who have completed extensive training both in India and various centres of excellence abroad.
The facilities provided in the Unit have expanded steadily and today it performs more than 3000 major surgeries per year and has an out-patient strength in excess of 12000 new patients and total outpatient attendance of 94,000 every year.
It is a busy clinical working unit striving to achieve academic excellence from the time of its inception, presenting its work in various national and international conferences which have won many accolades.
The Department has been recognised for the Post Graduate training in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery by the National Board of Examinations to train 4 candidates every year. It is also the first hospital in the country to be recognised for Super Speciality Training in Spine Surgery by the National Board of Examinations. It is also recognised as a centre of excellence for training WOC-Sulzer Training fellows. More than 60 surgeons from all over India passed through various training programmes of the hospital. Surgeons for the WOC-SICOT Training Fellowship from China, Indonesia and Ceylon were also trained in the hospital in the fields of Spine Surgery and trauma last year.
