Computer Assisted Navigation Surgery

Computer navigated orthopaedic surgery is one of the cutting edge technologies which is being developed to improve the safety and accuracy of surgery. This is available only in a few centres in the world. Ganga Hospital is one of the pioneers in the country to adopt this technology with an aim to bring the latest in technology to the patients in our country. Unlike most of the centres which have dedicated platforms, the hospital uses vector vision open platform of BrainLAB, Germany which allows the system to be used for all types of orthopaedic surgeries such as spine surgery, joint replacement surgeries and trauma. Navigation surgery was inaugurated in July 2004 by Prof Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam. To date, more than 500 joint replacements and 150 complex spine
fixations have been performed making the unit one of the largest navigation users in the world.

Apart from surgeries, the Unit has also a lot of academic and research work to verify the applications of these innovative techniques in all orthopaedic surgeries. The unit was recognized as a 'Research and Reference Centre' of BrainLAB in 2006 and subsequently has collaborated with many surgeons from all over the world . In the field of joint replacement surgery, the emphasis has been on to ascertain the superiority of navigated procedures in obtaining better alignment which will improve the longevity of the prosthesis and obviate the need for revisions. Special work has been done by Dr S Rajasekaran and Dr Dhanasekara Raja on the use of these techniques in
severely deformed knees.
